During the period of Brazil’s post-war, democratically elected leftist governments (1945-1964) initiated several architectural experiments. It was during an economic boom, during the Juscelino Kubitschek years (1956-61) that it was decided to finally move the capitol of Brazil from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia. As was the case with the Soviets Brazilian architects hoped to bring about a new social condition through architecture, though in the case of Brasilia the task was very self-consciously conceived as a design issue, as opposed to a scientific or planning issue.
