Historians tend to think of human history in terms of major events and famous personalities happening in kingdoms and nation-states--that is in land-bound terms. But as Carl Schmitt, pointed out, some of the most important developments have been connected with the sea and evolving technologies for traversing it and exploiting its resources.
In our Ship I lecture, we looked at the ship as a technical and aesthetic object in ancient cultures like Haida, Minoa, and Egypt. We also discussed the ship as the subject of rituals that shaped architectural and urban design and experience, a physical embodiment of the social order, and a source of formal inspiration.
