Lecture 2. Monumental Architecture in Stone

Today's monuments range geographically from Korea to France, England, Ireland and Egypt, and in date from the 5th to the 1st millennia BCE. What unifies them is their use of stone - used for a range of building types that speak to a human desire to provide enduring monuments on the landscape. While we may have monuments that have endured from very early dates, we don't always have full knowledge of why they were built or what purpose they served. Our earliest examples today date to a period before recorded history, though keep in mind that written languages developed at very different dates around the world. We refer to those cultures who did not record their stories in a permanent way as pre-historic.
