Lecture 7. English Calcutta: Company Colonialism

Calcutta as the English Capital of the Indian Ocean. There are two Systems of English Capitalist Power in India System 1Company Colonialism which in this lecture is defined by economic extractive power of East India Company and how reshapes the world through desire, addiction, wealth, violence and global war. System 2 is the deployment of Classicism as a means of Imperial Power, Christianity and Colonialism Calcutta demonstrates the Power of the East India Company in four ways. 1. Calcutta becomes known as the City of Palaces renowned for its grand architecture 2. Fort William, the Government House and the East India Company Headquarters (Writer’s Building) form a formal Axis of powerful edifices that anchor the city that will rule British India from 1773 to 1917 3. Classicism is used to not only imply the imperial power of the East India Company but to demonstrate moral Christian superiority 4. Calcutta’s inhabitants are all segregated in public by station and by race not merely through architecture but by customs and laws The 1799 Government House demonstrates the Power of the East India Company in five ways 1. The resurgence of Classicism and Grandeur as a racial White form of Power versus the “uncivilized” society and its architecture of the region 2. Emulation of Architecture back in England 3. Domination of the Landscape using Roman hybrid forms 4. Marking the Landscape 5. Modifying the architectural templates of England for climate, bureaucracy and military order, and important social functions
