This lecture discusses the design features and innovations of Prambanan and Sewu both of these very complex buildings from a theological and functional point of view. Both are further examples of the thematics of the mandala which is blended with the imaginary of a holy mountain. Both also have complex theological meanings that even today are not fully understood. The lecture also discusses what is now missing in much of the experiences of these places, the dance ceremonialism that is now only performed mainly for tourists. The lecture closes with a view toward Gunung Padang, a rather mysterious site about which still little is known. It was certainly a site dedicated to the nearby volcano, and it was also certainly a major shrine, but how it functioned and even what it was built are still much debated.
