I. Region
This section examines the invention of regional planning techniques in the interwar period through their permutations up to the present day, asking why and how a concept of “region” developed as a new category of design. Employed variously to remake existing political authority, create new connections between rural, urban and national scales, and to permit the management of human geography in relation to climate, landscape and natural resources, regional plans instrumentalized design at both large and small scales. This section will explore how the economic interests served by infrastructural services and public-works projects worked in relation to considerations of architectural aesthetics.
