This lecture covers the Colorado Plateau from Mesa Verde to the little known, but vitally important site of Hovenweep. This is arguably the height of the Puebloan cultural building until the 13th century. In addition Mesa Verde cliffhouses are likely the only architecture from this region that are taught in any survey. However, there is far more to this place than the brief cliff house period in the 13th C.
These regions have been inhabited over many centuries, in the ritual of replication and relocation that defined these people from their origins as First Societies (lecture 1). Generations will live in these places only to leave, then return, then leave only to return again.
What is more the story of what happened by 1300 when the entire region was vacated is poorly understood.
The common answer is drought, however that is not entirely accurate. The last leaving by 1300 was intense and in some cases violent.
