The lecture today looks at horse and camel as vital technologies of globalization. The transformation of camel from a food and textile source to a draft and saddle animal, likewise, the re-envisioning of horse beyond a source of meat, bones and skin into riding animals turned them from food and things into technologies. They introduced easier ways of traversing and living in inhospitable climates. Camels brought the ability to carry goods while horses brought speed to travel. Portability became possible. Both did not need extensive investment in roads and infrastructure that the wheel and carts would require. Carts and chariots needed state institutions, bureaucracy, army, and writing…inventions of the agrarian and sedentary cultures. Earliest Camel and horse cultures could trade, accumulate wealth, and prosper without these trappings.
