Lecture 5. Teresa of Avila and Chokyi Dronma: Interior Castles in Spain and Tibet

Claiming mystical experiences of the divine, Teresa of Avila and Choky Dronma have inspired devout followers for centuries with their spiritual biographies. Teresa’s ecstatic visions of the divine reignited the passion of the Catholic faithful in an era of crisis. Chokyi Dronma, as a princess, Buddhist nun, and tantric master, initiated a line of female reincarnations that exists today as the Samding Dorje Phagmo. While Chokyi Dronma was considered the embodiment of a deity, St. Teresa reportedly escaped her body in a mystical union with God. Both women served administrative roles, founded religious orders, and built monasteries. This lecture looks at the sacred spaces of their monasteries as earthly manifestations of compelling spiritual visions. At the same time, it places the fortress/palace/mausoleum/monasteries of El Escorial and the Potala Palace in their cultural and historical context. This lecture looks at the following regions: 1) Spain (1500-1650) 2) Tibet (1450-1650)
